I'm just a bit curious about to what degree sleep deprivation would be detrimental to positional chess understanding, as opposed to tactical foresight.

Drowsy driving is considered to be the cause of many driving accidents.

Nodding off or nearly nodding off while you are waiting for your opponent's move or when you get distracted by a repetitive thought chain fortunately won't kill any one.

Your knight vision is the first thing to go.

I'm sure it slows recall speed, which reduces how many positions you can analyze accurately per minute in your head. When I play blitz and notice I'm on a losing streak, it is likely from stress distracting my subconscious processing power, and prompts me to take a break from chess and address the issue, in this case sleep.
