1: If your opponent plays something weid, respond to it by playing something weirder (I recently just won a game as white by playing 1.d4 e5 2.Nf3)
2: Look to castle on the same side as your opponent if you are better. Look to castle on the opposite side if you are worse so that you can make the game more double edged.
3: If you are going to trade your queen for some of your opponent's minor pieces and/or a rook, make sure you can get a passed pawn or that you have a winning advantage, otherwise it might not compensate as you think it will.
