i been playing chess for a while off and on. My ratings are about 1100 does this mean im a begginner player? What rating would i have to become to be intermediate or advanced? Grandmaster or Master? Anyone Know?

Avatar of HappyBuddaH

i don't think people mean beginner in the sense that you just started playing. id say beginner is something like 1499 and under. intermediate ratings are probably 1500 to 1750, 1750 - 2000 is a very strong player and 2000+ is master type players.

all this is just a guess though.

My first guess is that people under 2000 would still be intermediate players, but all this is really subjective to me - so it's just a guess. Perhaps a master would shed some light to this, as they've been everywhere until they reached their title and would hopefully remember all stepping stones through the way up.

Yes u would be classed a beginner. An example of how it might work for chess.com ratings could be this;

Beginners here might be:- 1-1599

Intermediate might be:- 1600-1899

Advanced might be:- 1900-2199

Master level might be:- 2200-2499

Grandmaster level would have to be:- 2500 and above.

All this is just a guess. How it would compare to over the board may vary from country to countries ratings.

This is an entirely subjective thing, I seperate players into 7 tiers personally.  Notice the gaps in ratings, these are grey areas.  I'm talking about OTB ratings here, but they are pretty close to chess.com ratings.

Beginners - 600-1200

These players are those that play chess maybe a few times a year, or are just starting out in chess.  If they truly have a passion for chess, they will rise to the intermediate level given only time.

Club players (intermediate) - 1300-1700

These are the players that go to a club regularly, and have refined their skills.  However, they never are willing to put THAT much effort into chess, preferring to strike a balence.

Obsessive players (advanced) - 1800-2200

I find that these people are a notch about club players, these are the people I find invariably play tons, study hard, etc.  They are not once a week players, these are go to sleep thinking about chess players

National masters - 2200

These guys I have one word for - scary.  OTB, I've played 3, and met one more.  The first one I played I actually got in a great position against, then my brain absolutely collapsed, i started playing sloppily, and hung a bishop.  The second demolished me with the evans gambit.  The third was in a simul, I actually had an easily won endgame position (up a pawn, much better pawn structure, better activity), but again I completely exhausted myself, and accepted a draw in a completely won position because I couldn't analyze the position on the board anymore.  I ran out of stamina sooner then an old man playing 10 people at the same time, now THAT was a blow to my ego.

IM - 2300-2400

Never actually met or corrosponded with one in any way.  They have even more remarkable skills, but are clearly a step below GMs

GM - 2400+

Grandmaster level games make my brain explode when I try to annotate them.  Seriously, what the **** do these guys eat for breakfest?  By the time I've figured out the grandmaster was avoiding an unfavorable pawn structure transposition, that their move was thematic, that they were avoiding a 6 move tactic, and trying to rush things toward the endgame seeing how they have a queenside majority (in the course of two moves), my head explodes.  WHAT THE **** DO THESE GUYS EAT FOR BREAKFEST?  If I really feel like analyzing a game, I'll stick to the romantics and to NMs and IMs thank you.

World class - Well, the worlds best players.  Hey, these guys are famous!

I get a similar sensation. I'm very self satisfied if I manage to grasp a position well enough to consider a  line or two that is actually relevant. These guys see so much more and what they see they have a so much more subtle understanding of it is scary.

CoolI find a player rated 1600 on fics= a us chess federation of around 1900 to 2000 on chessbase about the same on chessclub assistant a 1600 about 1650.I have a good friend who at one time had a uschess rating of 2100 an he tells me its hard for him to hold around 1700 to1750 on free internet chess server. This all at 5 min blitz an i see him run over a few masters in the low us chess federation 2200 to 2250 range. Also there is a lot of cheating going even at blitz now on the internet.my high on fics was around 1650 had a few bad days an now at 1565.point is a 2000 player in my opinion on fics is more like a 2350 player. Now at the higher levels players such as nigel short the rating falls back to what it should be.So at low levels add about 350 pints on chess base an fics on chess assistant club add about 50 to 75 points with icc i do not play there but i hear its about like fics an chessbase add about 300 to 350 points. Not sure about this server after i lost afew games iwas wining easy because the server knocks me off i told myself never again will i play here untill this mess is cleared up.A shame as i love everything else here an its why i have not upgraded my account when this fixed i pay only then.

tiocru, your ratings for the higher echelons are a little low.  Try 2400 (maybe more like 2450)+ for IMs and 2550+ for GMs (and of course we're talking FIDE/USCF here, not chess.com).

Correct.

Here is a decent rundown of the scoring and what level you are considered (OTB):

I'm in that 1750-2000 and I'm hardly a very strong player Smile.

This is accurate, AND official (cool pirate hat, by the way)...and this list could be truncated by the general view that Class A players are "Advanced"; Class B players would be "High Intermediate"; Class C players would be "Middle Intermediate"; Class D players would be "Low Intermediate"; Class E players would be "Novice"; and all below that would be "Beginners".

If you want to move beyond the rating numbers, I opine that a beginner is a player who has worked somewhat, played somewhat, won from time to time, and believes that his chess skill is improving.

Then he plays in a big tourney, gets waxed, begins seriously analyzing his games, and realizes that he know very little about chess.

At that point, he understands he is a beginner.

Right, USCF considers everyone U1200 a novice. however, this is chess.com and we need to scale the ratings to match OTB.
