Before I knew GM standed for grandmaster, I thought it was just some sign to show how good the players were and I started creating names for them like "general majority" and "giant mass". You make up your own names and discuss about them!

CraftBukkit

GM: Giant Miss

FM: Farting Man

IM: Ignored Mater

NM: National Monument

Trapper4

GM: Great Moron

FM: Federal Moron

IM: International Moron

NM: National Moron

im just joking k lol

AwesomeXue

nice! sorry I forgot NM.

Cool

i just dont get it. i mean i might be wrong but for me it sounds dubious.

why would you want to be called potential master?? national master i understand but why potential master??? hey i just got my potential master title

adamplenty

It's Candidate Master, not Potential Master. I don't know why it's called Candidate.

but a candidate master is from the meaning of the word nothing more then a potential master, or am i incorrect?

AwesomeXue

I see...

adamplenty

I don't know why it's called Candidate, but it's an official FIDE master (not FM) title and recognised by Chess.com

if its a candidate to be a master, how can it be a masteR?

AwesomeXue

yes, thanks for clearing it out for me!

CMs are already Masters AFAIK. It's roughly equivalent to NM.

then why are they called candidates?? yes i know from the strenght they are, but from the title they are just candidates or not??? i just find it weird to want to pay for this dubious honor, i mean why would anyone do that??

adamplenty

AFAIK the only difference between CM and NM is that CM is FIDE, whereas NM is not.

but national master sounds honorable, while candidate master just sounds very dubious
