What does smothered mate mean?
There's a cool smothered mate in the Caro-Kann Smyslov Variation if black plays too casually. I've been hit by this once, but it's not something I'm ever going to forget.

It is grim for the knight because he loses half of his power, and it is grim for the king because he loses escape paths.
