what I like about chess

One of the things I really enjoy about chess is that no matter how many times I lose, I can utilize what I've learned along the way and then play another game...and quite possibly lose again!  But the learning process is very fulfilling.

I've learned to lose quite gracefully over the past few years...

But seriously, chess is different from many games in that it's open to analysis after the fact.

Well put, freezenyr!! Learning from one's lost games is one of the many great attributes of this game. Jkrzok, thank you for your point regarding chess being open to analysis.

I love this game for a plethora of reasons:

1. It's inexpensive to to get set up to play chess: You can make your own board and pieces out of paper if you have to. Then you can get a tournament set for around $20.00 for the Mat and Pieces.

 2. There are a vast numbers of books available to help you improve your game, many avaiable for no cost as ebooks.

3.Software prices have dropped so you can purchase a full service program like Chessmaster 10th Edition also for around $20.00, allowing you to play the computer, other players online, learn the game, review past great games in a database, and do chess problems.

4. You can train for a good protion of your chess career with a software program or by playing online (good if you live outside a metropolitan area).

Mostly I love the game because it takes me to a special place here I can escape the every day world I live in. It has rewarded me with new found knowledge every day. I can't find another game that so satisfies me in any way. The game of chess absolutely rules

I agree. But I beleive, that playing a good game all has to do with a solid opening.

i quite like the social part of it but i also enjoy learning from my mistakes. and you don't need to make a board/pieces out of paper because you can play online. in fact that is the first thing i did when i came to this website, before i even registered. i just went into play against the computer under play.
