What is a solid opening for white?

I would suggest you play standard openings like e4 or d4. Ultimately it depends upon your taste. If you like closed positions and you are bit of a positional player then you should play 1 d4. If you like open games and play tactically you should play e4. I advise you try all openings and play the one you are comfortable in.

For someone seeking help with choosing openings, I usually bring up Openings for Amateurs by Pete Tamburro (2014).
