What is a solid opening for white?

Hello and welcome!

nimit_chess

I would suggest you play standard openings like e4 or d4. Ultimately it depends upon your taste. If you like closed positions and you are bit of a positional player then you should play 1 d4. If you like open games and play tactically you should play e4. I advise you try all openings and play the one you are comfortable in.

For someone seeking help with choosing openings, I usually bring up Openings for Amateurs by Pete Tamburro (2014).

I believe that it is possible to see a fair portion of the beginning of Tamburro's book by going to the Mongoose Press site. Perhaps you would also want to look at Discovering Chess Openings by GM Johm Emms (2006).

I feel like the Ruy Lopez and the Italian game are pretty solid openings for white.

The London System is supposed to be great for beginners as it develops easily and doesn't take much memorization
