I like D4 because it seems to trip up people that have studied E4 'til they are blue in the face but haven't given the D4/D5 opening as much attention.
What is better, 1.e4 or 1.d4? Vote!

Indeed. I haven't been around here long but I must have seen five or six of these d4/e4 threads in that short period.
In answer to the OP. Neither is better or worse than the other. Both have merits and both should be known to you. Half the time you're going to play black. So half the time your opponent gets to decide, d4, e4, c4 or some other opening. You better be ready to play all of the above....

But getting to that, the OP did not state Standard or 960 and there are, let me think, 960(!) starting positions ..... Hmmmmm.
d4, nf6, nf3
e4. d4 leads to boring games.
E4 but c4 is the most explosive opening
e4. best by test. :D
