what is fun about chess

what is fun or intellectual stimulating at chess?

It's just stupid memorization and nothing else.

Real stupid game!

TomPetty

and when out of memorization it is just not making stupid tactical blunders, which hasn't anything to do with intelligence either, more just concentration. Chess is not much more interesting than the stupid buzz wire concentration game.

Who said chess is just about memorization? Chess requires a lot of mental skill and talent. It requires a lot of calculation and creativity. It's fun and interesting. If you don't like chess, it's YOUR opinion, not a fact. Just because you hate chess doesn't mean that the rest of the world should stop playing chess in order to be like you. By the way, if chess is "stupid", why are you a member of this site? Are you here to rant all day? Are you going to spew hate on forums? Keep your hatred to yourself.

For people who love the game of chess, it is like language. It expresses themselves. Language can be looked at as just "stupid memorization" if you wish, but it actually means something for those who want to expand their thinking;)

Perfectly stated! I couldn't agree more!

Now there is a paradox.

If you guys are right, than I am less intelligent than you guys  for the meaning I just expressed.

But if you guys are right, I am also more intelligent than you guys, because my chess rating is higher.

You've played many games on this site. Naturally, that means you have also won more games than me. Therefore, your rating is much higher than mine. Look at how many games I've played! You'll understand what I mean. Although your chess IQ might be better than mine, that has nothing to do with our overall intelligence.

Chess is a never ending puzzle.  There is always something new to learn.

I would say chess is alot more than memorization. I don't put alot of effort memorise openings or anything. Just use common sense and play logical moves. Thinking chess is just memorization might be the reason for your stagnation in rating.

I would also say that chess is partial related to intelligence (memory, concentration ARE parts of one's cognitive functions). But Intelligence is multi-faceted and chess covers only some parts of it.

If you think that chess rating = intelligence that actually makes you less intelligent.

Chess is the pleasurable struggle experienced while bringing forth the fruit of ones own ego.

The addiction to chess is a false hope, like running free without the labor-cost. The sweetest fruit of this addiction is self victory, its cloaked in beauty, and its expensive.

Ego is a fruit? I should stop memorize opening lines while eating oranges. Waw! That's why I become selfish!

I believe the OP has some point in to this. The continuous run to maximize our playing knowledge more than our limits has an affection to our idiosyncrasies. If we use chess only to satisfy with the winning result it's pointless because the happy feeling of this conquer does not promise progress.

The failure to discover a winning variation it's more important than to think that you know always the truth! It's your hope to become better and your motive to try again.

Chess is beautiful because of it inperfection.

Chess opening memorization is like a drunk squirrel chasing his tail

Ain't this the same bloke that gets pissed at losing a dumb game. Guys! We been trolled.

The original poster is right.  Psychologists have analyzed what makes a great chess player.  The answer, suprprising, is not intelligence.  There is no proof that top chess players are more intelligent than average chess players.

However, top chess players have a better memory.  They can memorize board positions with perfect accuracy after just a quick glance whereas average players can't.

Tactics is mostly memorizing and recognizing patterns, and applying them does not require advanced logic but really simple logic with limited possibilities.

Opening is all memory as it requires memorizing moves and it's associated middle game strategies.

Middle game requires study and understanding principles, which is also memory.

clearly though if you are a brain-dead moron, you won't even be able to figure out how the pieces move, so being a numbnut is not the advantage it appears to be.

See the reason I don't like chess is because it's boring, it's basically just trying to survive your game out and trying to kill the other players king, in my opinion, what would really make a game good is if it's not just about survival, it's about reaching you goal in a way where your not trying to survive, and your trying to leave a lasting affect, chess also doesn't have mini goals, mini goals are what make the game more interesting because if you don't reach them, even if they are not needed, your chances of winning will go down, chess however, doesn't have any mini goals, and that just makes the game boring, now I know this comment will cause a lot of controversy, but this is my opinion, now I really don't have any reasons I like chess, but still, I think chess is boring.

Chess is more exciting the better you get! At the 600 level it’s mostly just people hanging pieces but when you gat to 1200+ it has a lot more depth like sacrifices, positional play, long endgames, tactics and so much more!
