What is the benefit of making people resign rather than just start a new game?

Chess.com could just make it so the winning player sees that they won and you can just start a new game. Why is it necessary to have the extra step of resigning before you can start a new game? What is gained by this extra step?

Don't completely understand what you mean...

so, when you try to start a new game while you're currently playing one it won't let you. What I'm suggesting is that it just lets you and counts the current game you're playing as a loss. So it takes the step out of having to resign before starting your next game. I think it can be argued it's a redundant button and doesn't fit with the way a lot of people play (they like to move quickly to the next game).

with premium you can already play more than 1 game at a time and also clicking "resign" and then "confirm" is only two clicks so not much energy is wasted (if I am misunderstanding what you are asking then I apologise)

I was thinking of blitz and bullet games. Is it possible to play more than one game in those time controls if you have premium?

I'm more irritated with the folks who still have say 2 minutes left then just let the time run out.

do you see any point to having a resign button?

Greggo01

Yeah, if they used the resign button then the winner could likewise move on. No resign button means we are forced to wait.

I'm sorry if I offended you with my last post. I don't really care about that at the moment. You make a good point, though. It would benefit the winner as well as the loser. It's hard to see what we are actually gaining by having a resign button. It seems to me like it's tied up in this old idea of online chess being like OTB when at least in blitz and bullet people generally are moving through the games quickly.

yes it is but basically impossible to win games because you take double (or triple or quadruple) the amount of time

The resign function is for people with good manners. Clearly, it's not to everybody's taste.

I lose a lot of games by time running out, yet I don't feel that I'm playing that slow. Is there something I don't understand about the clock? Does it move quicker in some situations? Or do I just have to move faster?

That makes sense for OTB where you're actually sitting in front of another person in physical space and to start another game you'd have to set up the board again. The online experience is obviously different. Manners change all the time based on context. When a couple purchases a marriage license they act a certain way. It would be odd to act that way when purchasing a cheeseburger at McDonalds. Why is it necessary to have the same behaviors online as it is OTB? The games are played in an entirely different way.
