What is the best option for a hopeless position?

The answer here is quite simple & it depends on your rating & that of your opponent.

If there is ANYTHING you can learn by playing on then do it. If your opponent has a low rating make him prove he knows how to win. I've seen many lower rated players accidentally allow a stalemate especially if they have a large amount of material advantage.

If you see any chance of forcing a stalemate or perpetual check etc play on. As your rating goes up you will know when to resign & when to play on but until then keep playing.

With a weak side, most pieces taken, and a checkmate from your opponent a very real threat, what is the very best option?  To struggle on trying to get a draw or resigning immediately?

Rereading the starting comment, I suppose that you could be a move away from mating the opponent even with the huge deficit...in fact it was a spectacular set of sacrifices that led to your next move.

resign and thus retain a little self respect; to play on gets no respect from anyone

I am now resigning more often in what appears a hopeless position, I hate doing it, but to play on is just using time I could be spending on a game that had more potential in it for me.

What Kaminski said in Raw Deal resign or be prosecuted anyway you want it!

I agree. I hate the argument that you could learn from it or you should give people the pleasurable experience of winning. People can resign. You don't have to sit there and take the punishment.

Chess seems to be the only competitive sport where resigning is an option.  I have seen the All Blacks totally humiliate other teams, the only way they could possibly win is if a freak lightening storm struck every member of the opposing team, but nevertheless they have no option but to play on.
