What is the best response in the French to this?

No books go over this early f4 line of the French, but when I run possible lines in an engine, it looks perfectly good for white, and actually black seems to have the trickier moves later on.
Is there a reason this is not played? (The game below is an edited game, I didn't actually play it - it's engine recs for both sides after the 2.f4 move. Engine gives black a -0.4 evaluation for most of it, but it def seems much easier for black to go wrong here.)
