Was Xiong's tactic to get more time added to his clock? I don't see how all the knight moves in this game helped him positionally.

It's his part of his prep. Looks weird because you're going against chess opening principles but one of the perks of being a GM is that you can ignore the opening principles and still get a playable position, even though he lost this one
