What is the process of getting a USCF NM chess title?

Hi! I am David, and I am actively working to get a chess title.
I signed up for a USCF membership and won some OTB-rated USCF games at my local chess club. I was wondering, for those who actually received the NM title, how long did it take you?
Also, how many tournaments did you join? Did you have to go to those big tournaments that is out of town? Just wondering how much work you have to put in to reach that title.
