Try again o' troll extraordinaire...

Here is an excellent case in point about people (or in this case a troll) parroting what they've heard with absolutely zero evidence to back them up.

I understand listening is becoming a lost art, but give it a try. With Carlsen it would be fantasy to hear anything other than a thoughtful, well-spoken, intelligent young man. Autistic? Because he plays chess well? LOL.

He is autistic, he confirmed it himself in an interview...

http://www.nettavisen.no/sjakk/article1599185.ece confirmed by himself here.

So what if he is?  Carlsen is arguably the best chess player in the world.  I fail to see how autism would diminish his credibility in any way..

Did I ever say that?! I simply stated a fact wich were discussed in this topic. I never said it would diminish anything at all.

Magnus was asked all kinds of stupid questions and his answers reflects that. He was obviously ironic and a bit fed up...   Is this how you check your "facts" Erikovitch??   please stop these nonsense rumours based on a joke interview in 2008...

There is NOTHING obviously ironic about that question and answer...

I have no other reason to believe he is autistic so if anyone can then confirm otherwise by providing proof then do so!! Not just assume that a straight answer to a simple question is irony.

Hardly, Carlsen has addressed it since.

Fischer denied he was crazy, too.  That kind of high achievement at such a narrow field of endeavor is bound to blow a few circuits.

I don't fault the kid for his shortcomings.  Lord knows I have mine.  May his reign be long and full of scintillating endgame grinds.

the whole interwiev sequense was held in a light spirit way and so is the answers.  He has been asked about this several times, both in interwievs and in books about him.  I dont have to prove anything since I am not claiming to "know" anything about anothers persons diagnosis. I thing its rather sad that someone almost expect that brilliance need some kind of undocumented diagnosis.

I like Carlsens style, especially how he treats the openings. I'm a fan of positional play. I like the deep strategical planning of Karpov, Capablanca, etc. so of course I'm going to like his games & styles like that are going to have more moves match a computers moves in my opinion. I just keep getting the feeling he's not going to be playing as long as a lot of people think. He's achieved everything so early (after all, he was #1 when he was 19, the youngest in history) that he may lose his motivation. Also, financially speaking, I'm sure he's doing ok as long as he's invested well so money won't be much of a motivator. I would like to see him continue for a long time but I wouldn't be shocked at all if he didn't.

A little of topic but a good read;

I find it funny all the hype around computers and chess and here is a man who is most computer like.  what's that say about the future of chess!?

Ok so put it another way, you make some bullshit assumptions about "light spirit", but still fail to provide proof to your statement.

I had no reason to believe he had any condition, but did a google search and found that questionnaire from a fairly reliable source. (nettavisen) you are the ony claiming that youve read otherwise, but after some googling my source was the only confirmation of autist/not autist I could find. Maybe you can do better?

Edit: Just to clearify, Im not discussing this because I love arguing on the internet, but because I am truly interested in finding out the truth on this matter...

Avatar of Scottrf

What evidence is there? Armchair psychoanalysis from people who have never met him and a non-serious response to the question.

'isn't it obvious' is just clear irony.

Avatar of Erikovitch

Well, as I have repeated several times, I have no reason to believe he is authist other then the article I linked... But if it is true that he is an autist, then the response "isnt it obvious" would not be an obvious irony.

Avatar of Scottrf

It would to me, but I'm always amazed at some of the sarcasm/irony people take literally on the forum, so perhaps my irony detector is better than average.

Its kinda hard to explain I guess, but from my knowledge autists are not very good at irony. So a person with the diagnosis can say something wich would seem ironic but is just stating a fact.

Im not gonna argue about this anymore, I have no reason to believe he is autistic(other then the link I provided) and I have no reason to believe he is not. The ONLY "proof" provided in this thread is the link I posted, everything else is just assumptions and general nonsense.

My point being is that an autistic person is not very good at irony, and maybe (if he actually is autistic) in his head he was simply stating a fact (Isnt it obvious)

I would be very thankfull if anyone could provide me with a source wich confirmes it/denies it as I am very interested in knowing.

Just to clearify: I am a big fan of Carlsen and I think his achievements are fantastic.

Well... he's a hugely popular chess player for the last few years.  Just google "Magnus Carlsen Autism" and if all the hits are websites with kids speculating then you know it's nonsense.

If there are news articles, interviews, wiki, etc.

But yeah... popular guy the last few years.  We'd all know it by now if he'd been diagnosed.  Remember it's an actual condition not "oh he's smart and awkward, I think I know now"  Kind of like IQ... there are tests... not not online tests, real tests administered by psychologists.

I work with autistic people, and I´m convinced that Magnus is no way near being an autist.  You can´t say he is, based on how his playing style is now. Remember that he has changed style quite dramatically since he became grandmaster and eventually amongst the world´s elite players.  He used to be very aggressive, but found out he had to change style into a more positional and accurat way of playing if he should be able to compete with and defeat the likes of Kramnik and Anand, who actually used to wipe the floors with him when he was in his mid teens.

He's extremely talented so that would be in line with autistic abilities since his visualization and memory are off the charts.  Bobby Fischer also comes across as an autistic Al Bundy from the interviews I've watched on Youtube.  Autism isn't necessarily bad and the fact that people are questioning if he has it suggests he's high functioning.  I estimate that his IQ is at least 170 though estimations above 150 are really hard.  Richard Dawkins comes across as a 155 (or 99.99th %ile depending on the test) whereas Hitler and Obama seem like 145 (hate the former, like the later so don't think it's to smear the president).

Avatar of poodlemuncher

Weighing into this is probably pointless...but my opinion as a Psychologist after watching Carlsen in interviews is that he demonstrates no recognisable autism or asperger-like behaviours.
