what is up with the rating estimator?

so, this is not a post about how the rating estimates can be super extreme, but rather, why in the world did it rate this game as 2200 v 1800? this is a 10min rapid of mine. (for the record, i tried analyzing it without our ratings as input, and it gave even higher -- 2300 v 1900). i imagine maybe it is less accurate for short games but....seriously??

Guess I don't understaand Chess.com ratings. How is it posssible for a player to be rated 1740, lose one game and suddenly the rating is 1337? Are these ratings for the player's general level or for each game played? Can someone please explain? Thank you.

The estimator is a gimmick, just like accuracy %. Just use centipawn loss to gauge accuracy in play, like everyone else.

Just to give you an idea how bad the rating estimator is, try this: import a PGN from one of your games, but change the elo to something way high, for example, give yourself and your opponent a 2500 elo rating in the text. The rating estimation will change even if the game is exactly the same.

If you lose large amount of rating like that, it's because you haven't played a lot of games in that specific game type (blitz, bullet, rapid or whatever) thus your rating is still provisional and you gain a lot of points for a win and lose a lot of points when you win or lose.

After playing several games, your rating becomes more accurate and you won't be losing or gaining a lot of rating points when you lose a game.
