Mostly, I listen to different eras of Classical Music while playing (Prokofiev, Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Liszt etc). However, I have also played to metal, classic and folk rock, and Gaellic-Celtic Music as well at one point or another.

The thread is amazing
I don't listen to music during tournament play -- I think I'd find it distracting. I kind of wonder how others aren't distracted as well, especially if the style of music is so varied. If that's what you're used to though, I guess it could work, but songs I know I tend to sing along with or follow the beat and it isn't white noise anymore.
If I want to push my calculations just a few more moves or stop at a certain visualized position and look really hard for tactics this would distract me and I'd likely have to start over. Maybe this is because I sometimes speak the moves in my head as a way of holding a line in short term memory for a bit. Anything that isn't white noise to me would disrupt that (eg when the songs change).
I listed to about anything while playing online.

Slavko Avsenik - Großglocknerblick!
I totally love Mr. Avsenik's life work! THis is not for everyone but I set up more than a hundred of his pieces to play and spend the evening playing either poker or chess.
At tournaments, some people like listening to music on their ipods. Do you listen to music while playing? Do you find it helps you or distracts you? If you do, what is your playlist?
i listen to electronic (trance) music and it doesn't distract me at all because there are no lyrics in this music genre. my playlist includes popular tracks from paul van dyk, tiesto, armin van buuren, etc.
