"These Hypermodern players who object to 1.e4 will play about 20 moves in which nothing happens; then the annotator will declare with a flourish, 'and now White threatens e4!'"

Emanuel Lasker

"The chess pieces are the block alphabet which shapes thoughts; and these thoughts, although making a visual design on the chess-board, express their beauty abstractly, like a poem. ... I have come to the personal conclusion that while all artists are not chess players, all chess players are artists." - Marcel Duchamp (There has been debate about the translation)

"He who analyzes blitz games is stupid." - Nezhmetdinov (cited by Kramnik in "My Life and Games" according to Soltis in "The Wisest Things Ever Said about Chess")

"That rakia from cow dung you are drinking apparently has bad side effects." - IM pfren

As a rule, the more mistakes there are in a game, the more memorable it remains, because you have suffered and worried over each mistake at the board.-korchnoi

The passed Pawn is a criminal, who should be kept under lock and key. Mild measures such as police surveillance are not sufficient.  NIMZOVITCH

I like the chess comparison which Boris Spassky used to explain why his first marriage failed: "We were like bishops of opposite colors".Having an exwife i can relate.

"And the Devil bared his teeth in a grin as he pushed his c-pawn one square, for the Caro-Kann comes from the deepest pits of Hell."

When I have White, I win because I am White; when I have Black, I win because I am Bogolyubov.  -  Efim Bogolyubov

Chess is not for everyone. Most people are not egotistical (when I deign to notice them), nor are they obsessional (not that I am; I'm not. Really, I'm not. I'm not I'm not I'm not); nor are they competitive enough (I think I've proved that this is the best post on this board). -- Unknown

Bobby Fischer:

- That's what chess is all about. One day you give your opponent a lesson, the next day he gives you one.

- I like the moment when I break a man's ego.

- Best by test. (on 1.e4)

- I'm not afraid of Spassky. The world knows I'm the best. You don't need a match to prove it. (just prior to their '72 match)

On Fischer:

- Suddenly it was obvious to me in my analysis I had missed what Fischer had found with the greatest of ease at the board. -- Mikhail Botvinnik

- Many chess players were surprised when after the game, Fischer quietly explained: "I had already analyzed this possibility" in a position which I thought was not possible to foresee from the opening. -- Mikhail Tal

- It is difficult to play against Einstein’s theory. -- Mikhail Tal (on his first loss to Fischer)

- When you play Bobby, it is not a question if you win or lose. It is a question if you survive. -- Boris Spassky
