depends on the mood, if I am playing 3 minute blitz, usually something with deep bass >.<

Yeah, I'm getting that through my big arse speakers.

I use silencing headphones when I play chess.  I love music, but it is distracting to me.

Ear buds covered by regular earmuffs can be pretty amazing for blocking out noise.

I use headphones that are designed for wearing when firing guns.  They say Winchester on the sides.  $7 at Wal-Mart.  I take them to every tournament and I wear them during serious games online at home.

AEpps

ambient dubstep. Artists like "Ott", "Emancipator", "Shpongle", "Phutureprimitive". I highly recommend it! heres a link just in case you don't believe me.

I've seen people do this before.  I think it's a pretty good idea.  Sometimes I have a ringing in my ears though if it's too quite for a long time and that can be distracting so not sure I'd do this myself.

I basically had to do it.  At my last big OTB tournament there was a post-wedding party booked in the same room as our tournament (it was one of those big hotel meeting rooms with a temporary divider wall separating us).  I bought the headphones that night, after that game.  Turns out I needed them.  The next day I was seated right underneath the pairings/standings sheets tacked to the wall and right by the only squeaky door entrance to the room, which was never still for more than a minute the entire tournament.  If I hadn't had those headphones for that game, I would've stood no chance at concentrating.

Wow, nice save with the headphones.

I have an album called "man size hits". Full of the best classical music and isn't too distracting for me when I play.

MSteen

No music. When I play chess, I play chess. When I listen to music, I listen to music--and perhaps drive. But if I'm in heavy rush hour traffic? No music then, either.

Agreed. Try Shulman also.

Bands like Arch Enemy, Black Label Society, Metallica, Kreator, etc....

Erik has good tsate in music for playing chess but I wish a metal band would riff around the Knight Rider theme and kick some ass with it. That would be awesome for playing chess to.

AS for me, I listen to many different things playing, from Hans Zimmer and Klaus Badelt to Luke Bryan to even Primus and frank Zappa if I am in a weird mood.

Oddest song I have played chess to? A lap dance is better when the stripper is crying by the Bloodhond Gang.
