What players do with their time is their right

I've seen people get restricted for letting the timer run out instead of resigning, and I want to opine that players are allocated that time on purpose and they have the right to do whatever they want with it. It shouldn't be Chess.com's business to tell players what they should do or shouldn't do with their game time. If they want to run the time out, that is absolutely their prerogative.

Hmm. Their right?

It is a game, which requires a certain basic level of courtesy to succeed. If you repeatedly abandon the game or otherwise disappear in losing situations, your opponents have the right to interpret that as unsportsmanlike behavior. Chess.com just enforces the will of the players to see that you are removed from the group of players.

If a player is at such a disadvantage that they consider the game lost, they should resign rather than letting their time run out.

Players should feel free to use the time that they are allotted for a game however they see fit until it becomes obvious that the losing side is only using their time to deprive their opponent the ability to start a new game. Nobody wants to deal with sore losers like that or play on websites that continually permit that behavior.

Abandoning the game in a losing position is very poor sportsmanship, yes players can take their time and use it but knowingly walking away instead of resigning is just showing your opponent how bad you are at losing. Zero respect for the game or the other persons victory.

Time runs for us all, in game and out. Just be sportsmanlike and resign.
