what question is more important in chess? What? why? or how?

How can I get my pieces to the center to control squares in my opponents base? (which should answer why) What squares are under my control? How do I take advantage of this situation?

I found myself playing a game the other day and just simply winning control over a critical central sqaure and already felt like I was up a piece .. which was true in short order after I gained the control.

It feels like there's more to it.

If you know the "why" you can figure out the how. Most don't know the why and are forever making plans that will never work. Chess, in my opinion, is about the why. The "how" is the tactics, the "why" is the plan.

very well said.

I can agree with that. I just always run with the plan.. try to gain center control and put my pieces on nice squares... why? Its because its creating mines on the battlefield or another words.. setting traps for the opposition...  Let me try to give an example. I am sure there was moves a missed in this game.. but pay special attention to me trying to control the center and place my pieces in the enemy camp. Keep in mind this guy was 1700 rated and ended up falling for the forks once my pieces were in his house

What: defeat the enemy king

Why: isn't that what you're playing the game for, buddy?

How: if there was a simple answer to this question, chess would no longer be played anymore
