Lol, That brings back memories, I remember at the club I used to belong to, watching blitz games, almost all their chess pieces were broken or marred in some way.
Kings, and Queens without their tops. Chipped bases, or tops on others. You can buy sets of plastic ones, as far as which is best weighted or not I guess its just personal preference. I personally would get weighted, but I do not play blitz, but you can always use whatever you do decide in regular games as well.
The price difference isn't that large. I like triple weighted, or very heavy pieces. They are usually made from a more durable plastic (I think) as well. Good luck.
For tournament play, it's hard to see how one can go wrong using a standard black and off-white "standard" USCF plastic set. The ones I have that I purchased in the 90s are solid plastic and very resilient. Match them with a green and buff board with 2.25" squares and they appear to meet both USCF and FIDE tournament requirements.
However, where they might fall down (bad pun intended) is in Blitz play. I know a lot of people prefer weighted sets for Blitz but I'm of the opinion that these are more prone to damage than unweighted solid plastic sets. What are the preferences of people here? Do you just use an inexpensive weighted USCF tournament set and repair or replace the pieces if and when they are damaged, or do you prefer other options?
I'm curious to hear what people here think about this subject.
