My coach charges $50 per hour if you want t become an IM in one year and $100 if you want to become an IM in six months.

Just to add on, he's really good. He shows me a lot of attacking games and tactics, so far my rating hasn't improved but I can feel myself getting stronger!

While you may have been joking, quite often a player improves dramatically and even loses rating points for a while. It can take some time to unlearn the mistakes you've been relying on to score wins against other fish.

That sounds like roid rage...

That's what I couldn't quite figure out either (as happens more than occasionally around here).

It reminds me of the following exchange:

MARCIA WALLACE: "No, if you were serious, that would just be too bizarre..."

JIM IGNATOWSKI:  "Do you like bizarre?"

She was good on Newhart.

Taxi is incredible. Jim and Lodca (sp?) are just two of the “outside the box” characters which make the show so special.

At my club kids can come every Thursday for 1 hour for teaching at 66 dollars PER YEAR. The teacher is estimated 1600-1700 OTB rated. And that in a country which things cost up to 6 times more than in USA. You pay 0.5 dollar for a can of coke, we pay at average 3 dollars. And up to 4 dollars.

It`s a robbery to charge that much.

No one is forcing you to spend that much for sugar water.

This is precisely why i quit going to Dodgers games.  I got tired of being forced to pay $30 to park...$12 for a hot dog...$10 for nachos...$8 for a soda...And try getting a parking space when you arrive in the 2nd inning?????  At least its easy to leave in the 7th.

They pay "that much" for sugar water because 0.5 lt of beer in Norway costs more than $10, served.

And the dollar was worth 5.5 some years ago. Now it's 8.3. Which means that beer costed around 18 dollars a few years ago. I worked in the US for 7-8 years. It's a very cheap country.

I'm guessing there aren't many alcoholics in Norway if booze costs that much.

We have some. It's more popular to be a drug addict than alcoholic. Finland has ALOT of alcoholics.

You have to find the best solution for you in your location.

The assumption that the higher rated player will make be a better teacher is common on this forum, but it is a poor one.

Admittedly, A 1400 player isn't really very strong in the world of competitive chess. However, if s/he can engage your kids, teach effectively, and is positive and patient. It is important to find someone who can put their thought process into understandable explanations. A teacher like that would be a lot better than a GM whose lesson is that it is easy to find the best move because, "The best move is obvious." lol

Many high level players have little patience for teaching someone basic checkmates and tactical fundamentals.

Perhaps you can negotiate a price with this teacher or investigate Skype lessons? Maybe $40 - 50 per hour for three kids or something like that? Especially if this is going to be a regular lesson, so if it is $500 for 10 lessons, s/he may be more willing to negotiate.
