What were the colours of the squares and pieces of the first ever created chessboard?

Just a question in my mind, were the squares first white and black? Then, were the colours of pieces light brown and gray or dark brown? Or is it the other way round?

This doesn't answer the colors of the squares question but does have nice pictures of very old chess sets.
