What would be the rating of a top chess player in the late 1800s today

I don't know how many folks are aware that Fischer edited the chess column for "Boy's Life," the Boy Scout's monthly magazine, from Dec. 1966 March 1970 (after he "went on vacation," Al Horowitz took over and stayed from April 1970 March 1971, when Larry Evans became the chess editor from April 1971 June 1978).

Fischer's articles, very many of which are available though Google Books using THIS LINK, were very charming and engaging.  He really seemed to have had a knack for this type of thing.

nice one batgirl!

Great link! Good to see Bobby's human side. Shame he had to go nuts and be miserable in his final years. He was an interesting person as well as a genius.

Why do some "quotes" end up on the bottom while the "quote" feature always puts the qoute on the top in a shaded area?  Is that the effect of a mobile devise vs a computer?

Yeah yeah I know, he's a newbie,do we entertain his question or not? All I am asking is Bobby Fischer's book on teaching chess worth its weight?

If you are talking about "Bobby Fischer Teachs Chess" then, yes, it is a good primer.

patzermike

Could be. I usually post from android phone.

Thanks.  I've seen several such quoting effects in the past week or two, though I'd never seen it at all previously.  I was wondering if there had been some mobile devise app update that accounted for it.  It's really difficult to follow, so the developers may want to reconsider this "improvement."

Yup, talking in the forums on mobile phones is a bit of a nightmare. Between the  overzealous auto-correct on my phone and the quotation issues on the site, it's a bit of a challenge.

This site was obviously built with sweatshop labor. Easily one if the worst on the internet.

batgirl

I don't find that to be remotely true.

You've been smoking bowls with Magikstone

It's a horrible, buggy, featureless forum.  We might as well be typing in IRC.

batgirl

I've been on many, many forums. I find this one the easiest as well as the most appealing.

90s forums don't count! Wink

batgirl

I've been on forums in the 1990s, the 2000s and the 2010s.  This is the best in my experience.

leiph18

I have no complaints.

The web is full of chess forums. These have been the most active since 2008 or before. That's probably due to their "featureless" qualities, such as being able to post replayable annotated games, photographs of grilled dead animals, the heads of cabbages, and hyperlinks.
