What would you do?

This position is with myself playing black on another chess site. I warned white at this point that he can only lose but I think maybe he wanted to try for a stalemate. I saw the stalemate possibility and told him specifically that I would not allow it, but still he played on. Once he makes his only move, I capture his h-pawn and march mine all the way to checkmate, ignoring whatever he does along the way. Doing anything else gives him a chance to promote a pawn first or to get a stalemate and I can't allow that to happen. So was I right or wrong in allowing him a chance to exit gracefully before the crush and why do people insist on playing on when they can't win or even draw?

it's a forced mate. white starts h4, gxh4, g5, h3, gxh6, h2, h7, h1Q#.

nothing they could have done about it. some people like to do things the hard way.

Actually you were breaking decorum by speaking to him about the game at all, except to offer your resignation.  It's his right to play to the end.

"If I capture his pawn, it is stalemate..." is true if hxg5, but not fxg5, which still wins. Maybe White hoped Black would think the "opposition" was necessary and play Ka3 and on top of that allow gxf6-f7-f8+Q+. Another simpler fantasy was to wish for 2...h5 3.g6 h3 4.g7 h2 5.g8=Q+. Another more realistic hope is that your connection would go down. The position does not protect you from that. Playing the game out while your connection is working is faster and safer than offering opinion and analysis.
