Actually you were breaking decorum by speaking to him about the game at all, except to offer your resignation. It's his right to play to the end.
This position is with myself playing black on another chess site. I warned white at this point that he can only lose but I think maybe he wanted to try for a stalemate. I saw the stalemate possibility and told him specifically that I would not allow it, but still he played on. Once he makes his only move, I capture his h-pawn and march mine all the way to checkmate, ignoring whatever he does along the way. Doing anything else gives him a chance to promote a pawn first or to get a stalemate and I can't allow that to happen. So was I right or wrong in allowing him a chance to exit gracefully before the crush and why do people insist on playing on when they can't win or even draw?
