When "Chomping On Hanging Pieces" is a TERRIBLE Idea...

You have to learn how to chomp before you can run.

If you haven't mastered the art of chomping then all your games will end with a piece hanging.

You are in the minority here MaetsNori. I mean in the higher rated players. And I suppose Curry could be counted as one in the minority as well. But that's two out of many who have shared their thoughts. At the end of the day, it's a disagreement between opinions, but so far, it's pretty polarizing depending upon rating, and so it's not elo shaming to bring up that correlation. Furthermore, it seems that the higher rated players have been much more respectful than everyone else participating, which I find funny. Everyone makes fun of everyone and calls people trolls but it seems to me that many higher rated players are just agreeing with Chomper's advice.

Well it’s nice to be included in the “higher rated players” category… this is a novel experience for a jumped-up amateur like myself 😭

Don't let online ratings give you an ego. OTB we're above average club players, online we might as well be Magnus to these posters.

This is a fair take, tbh. To an extent. I agree that at the very lowest ratings on the platform, there’s a lot to gain from understanding how pieces capture and actioning it when it appears… but just telling someone to chomp isn’t actually helpful advice.

i think that’s the crux of the issue I have with the rhetoric: I fully support encouraging beginners to analyse a position and work out if there is free material to be picked up, but just telling beginners to capture material doesn’t help them. We should be teaching beginners about good squares (as pieces not on good squares will often be left hanging more regularly), we should be teaching about the importance of counting defenders, about trying to work out what our opponents want rather than concentrating only on our pieces, about how to improve board vision etc..

Plenty of beginners may not even know what a “hanging” piece even is!! I firmly believe that chomper et al are not intending their comments to be used as actual chess advice, and it’s instead some bizarre ego trip to put down everyone else. That’s why I take issue with it.
Im yet to see him post something along the lines of “10 ways to scan for hanging pieces” or “how to reduce blunders” or anything like this. His rating is (apparently) 2400+, and it would be great for more people at this rating to share their wisdom with others. I could learn a lot from someone 700 points higher than me in blitz, for instance.

Oh dw, I’ve done enough otb tourneys to know that I suck at classical still 😂😂 I’m trying to improve my abysmal ECF rating. My FIDE blitz is okay though.

Also - side point - it is frankly disturbing to see how well clickbait works. And the effect of arguments and anger in content. My previous forum post had no comments, but imparted some basics of king/pawn endgames that anyone under 1200 elo probably doesn’t know. But this forum and my one that flexed the 2000 rating for giving advice both got over 100 comments. Do yourselves a favour and interact with genuinely constructive content, not just clickbait and ragebait!

My fide takes ages to catch up to my ECF but it's supposed to be the same idk why

Curry, as a general rule, the threads that get the most comments, but not necessarily the most read, are the ones created by Trolls with the expressed intent to provoke. However, there are some threads that discuss off-topic or current affairs that are legitimate in the sense they were actually created for engagement not for trolling. When cycling between these two types of threads it is clear which is which. Instructors of Informal logic or Psychology would do well to include online forums, such as this one, in their course content.

Hey I created a Star trek thread and like discussions on physics and Sci fi, just for fun if anyone wants in general thread.

I'm shocked how easy it is (for me) to fall into it. I guess that's why it happens is because it works. But I don't need to subject others or myself to it. I apologize to anyone who might be offended by my comments at times. I'll be keeping them to myself going forward. happy

ADDED: Of course the goal is not to have those thoughts at all but ... BABY STEPS.

Can’t believe I didn’t include this one! It’s a cracker where your opponent accepts a few too many free pieces (kinda - I mean they’re already lost after a passive move, but it’s a fun demonstration as to how material really isn’t everything…)

#18 game WOW. Amazing

#172 some of opponent's hanging pieces have bombs( hidden tactics/strategy for a person's enemy to win ) in it. If you chomp them, you will be in a losing position.

Are you basing your assessment of my chess skills on my bullet? The only bullet I’ve played this year was drunk on Saturday with my friend Xav 😭😭

Oh wow... Do you realise your argument is just "he does not think like me => he is wrong" Also you have made your account supposedly 2 days ago and you're 100 elo. OP has been here for 4.5 years and is 2000. My question for you is : have you even read the post to know what this forum was about ?

Fide ratings start at 1400

My guy’s first comment on this post was an attempt at Elo shaming and now he’s upset about it. Another alt for the trolls, we love to see it.

Elo shaming?

How typical. You are just another arrogant <1000 FIDE level player.

Just 2 lines and yet so many things to talk about. Elo shaming ? No. I just wanted to make a comparison, because you said "this 1300", which is false and could be even considered elo shaming from yourself. There was nothing insulting or shaming in what I said. Typical/another ? Again, you have been here for two days. Show me posts in the last two days concerning elo shaming. Arrogant ? Never talked about myself here, just about how your argument was ridiculous. <1000 FIDE ? It doesn't even exist, and I was rated 1600 when I used to play in a club 5 years ago.
