When Did Chess First Make Sense?

It makes perfect sense when I'm studying, when I'm doing tactics training, when I'm thinking about it.

Then, when there's a board in front of me, it is utterly befuddling.

If it starts making sense to you start looking out for 218 digit numbers which appear to be the key to everything ...

Chess start making sense is when you stop using the engine.

Sure Kasparov wouldn't feel nearly as lost as us amateurs in positions, and not nearly as often, but he knows he makes mistakes.  He stayed on top for so long because he relentlessly looked for his own mistakes.  And it's not like he won every game he ever played -- no one claims to know it all, all they can do is claim to know it better than those around them.

And hey, I thought we were playing a game Musikomole :p  Although I understand if you want to stop.  It's not a real position, and because of the lopsided starting position you don't stand to gain anything by winning.

I see the problem. Thank you.

I'm not thinking about chess making absolute sense, as in, game solved. A few qualifiers are in order.

When did chess first make enough sense to where most of the time, you can find a good move in not all, but many chess positions?

Is that enough qualifiers?

No. "Good" is still only relative.

Blindfold chess for me is just redundant.

Time to get out of that Boab tree of your padman !

I learnt the rules of Chess back when I was about 7 or so (I'm 16 now). A big problem with my playing when I was younger is that I was impatient and would make rash mistakes. As I've gotten older, I've managed to force myself to slow down, think and ultimately become a better player.

I think that chess is a lot like a quote I heard which was attributed to Einstein:

"I used to be confused about this subject. Now I'm still confused, just on a higher level!"

I don't think chess makes sense at all..

controling squares, holding the center, activating the pieces, defending the king, pawn chains, endgame, and more and more, while the priority of each changes in each position and on top of that random tactics may still occur.. how can that make sense?

Whether Einstein said that or not, that quote certainly applies yo me

Einstein did say,

You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else.

It made sense to me to play compared to checkers, the only game of strategy I knew at the time. I was completely blowm away with the different moves the chessmen can make, especially the knight. Anything that keeps my mind active and alert makes sense to me.

It first made sense after I achieved enlightenment while meditating under a baobab tree. Then some months of video games restored the fug of ignorance. Thanks a lot Nintendo.

How could you possibly achieve enlightenment under a tree that makes absolutely no sense? It's upside down! The roots point upwards, it appears. How did this tree survive natural selection?

I wouldn't want it in my front yard. It looks horrible. Laughing

Chess started making sense to me about three months ago. I've been playing for a long time and have had my rating as high as 2046. However, it wasn't until I upped my tactical studies and did some serious playing that it started to make sense. Of course, what makes sense to me is only scratching the surface of the game's complexities.

Few things in this world make sense. Chess makes sense even though I don't understand it, does that makes sense?

Of course it makes sense.  I don't understand how all of the instruments in an orchestra function, but I enjoy listening to the music.  I couldn't care less if I don't understand all there is to chess, it makes me feel good to play it. It never gets dull or loses its intrigue.

I'm pretty sure the baobab tree was in From Hell It Came (arguably the silliest movie monster ever btw--it looks kind of like a carving of Yosemite Sam).

It shows up around 0:45 here...in the meantime enjoy the Susan Hayward wannabe wrestling with the native girl:

People paid to see that?  I hope the popcorn was good. It is amusing to see the special effects in those old movies.
