When should I trade pieces

Hello everyone,

I am 600 rated after around 600 rapid games, and I am kind of stuck here but I know why, I am only good with one opening and I don't understand principles I just remembered a lot of variations which I know is not good. However here is my question.

Let's say I am white, and we play:

1. e4 e5, 2. Ng3 Nc6, 3. Bb5 a6

In this case, top engine move is Ba4, but today I played this game where I am black:

1. e4 e5, 2. Ng3 Nc6, 3. Nc3 Nf6, 4. d3 Bb4, 5. Bg5 O-O, 6. a3 Ba5 and here Ba5 was an inaccuracy as per engine I should have taken Nc3, but why?

How can I determine when should I trade and when should I not, please have in mind that I am pretty bad at chess so try to simplify if possible.

Thank you!

In this position you had to capture on c3 cause white simply can chase your bishop by b4 followed by Nd5 which will shatter your king side pawn structure, and this is kind of advantage for white, and he can initiate an attack on the black king. or if you want to keep the dark squared bishop on the board then you could have played Be7 instead of Ba5 to unpin the knight on f6.

Levy Rozman actually has a book "How to Win at Chess." It has a table inside about when to trade pieces. But there are many other books about when to trade such as the Strategies book by Yasser Seirawan. They both have when to trade pieces, which basically include:

DO NOT TRADE WHEN:

  • You have more space.
  • You are down in material.

DO TRADE WHEN:

  • You are trading a bad piece for a good piece.

There are probably more, and I may edit this list. Anyway, there are other factors mainly depending on the position. If it's closed, you should try to keep your knights. If it is open, try to keep your bishops. If it is closed but you have bishops, you can make it open by trading pawns. I suggest getting that book on Levy Rozman, which will help for your rating.
