Let's say your faced with the Decision of choosing to play Chess only with the white pieces or only with the black pieces forever.. Wich side would you take and why?

White of course.
Even if you feel like playing black once in a while, you can just lose a tempo and you are black.
The one playing black forever never can play white if he feels like it.

TheMsquare

Well he chose not to play white in the first place then.. so that's not really a downside to choosing black.. however you do make a great point .. but by losing the tempo you also do alter the position. No matter how you go about it it is not exactly the same as choosing black

as much details as I like....well...white because stats
TheMsquare

And if you choose to lose the tempo in a way that makes it that you have a position that is really in effect black ( although you will need mirror vision) your repertoire will be very limited for properly playing as if you in effect really are playing black.

So you can say your choosing white with options of silver

TheMsquare

Hmm. Stats is a factor. But if that's the only reason my response would be that the stats for white has been reached via global play. Not just your own. Unless your referring to our own stats then it is a excellent factor to consider

"your repertoire will be very limited for properly playing"
++ What would you like to play as black against 1 e4 and 1 d4?
There is a way to reach that as white by losing a tempo.

In the time of Adolf Anderssen white did not play first. First they decided on the colors and then they decided who would start the game. Anderssen played many famous white games with the black pieces. Anderssen did not dislike going second and often opened 1 a3.

Xiguadog

White because you have a extra tempo.

TheMsquare

#6  .. I have not revealed my answer yet. So let's say those who want to play black wants white to keep playing white .. e3 intending to lose a tempo with e4 can be met with something else rather than e5 in a way that the intended tempo loss results in white still playing a white opening.. same can be said for d3 intending d4 with a tempo lost.. to keep white playing white no d5..

Plan foiled

A3 alters the position so it is not completely playing second

TheMsquare

#6  also personally I wouldn't mind using the white repertoire in either case. So the tempo loss idea still suits me

TheMsquare

Thanks for the info on how they went about business back then. Quite interesting..

I would imagine that the majority of players would choose white, making it so there would be a lot fewer games. (white vs white?) choosing white might take longer to find a match, so I might choose black

Wits-end

At my level it is irrelevant. Perhaps if I advance, I would likely choose white as with correct play you will always have tempo on your side.

TheMsquare

We have one for black.. many for white so far.. mm 🤔 .. I believe I'm casting my choice now. BLACK!

1. white will be chosen by the crowd making black the cool choice vs the popular choice

2. I like a challenge

3. I believe black also can play to win from move one. With or without tempo.

4. The opening repertoire for black is extremely versatile.

5. I will have options of my favourite white openings against tempo losers such as our friend in #6.

6. When you win with black you get more respect espeacially the higher the ratings go

"e3 intending to lose a tempo with e4 can be met with something else rather than e5"
++ What something else? 1 e3 e5 2 e4 = 1 e4 e5, 1 e3 c5 2 e4 = 1 c4 e5, 1 e3 d5 2 e4 = 1 d4 e5, 1 e3 Nf6 2 d3 e5 3 e4 = 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 d6, 1 e3 d5 2 d3 e5 3 d4 = 1 e4 e6 2 d4 d5...

"A3 alters the position so it is not completely playing second"
++ 1 a3 alters the position minimally, so it is almost like playing second.
If it is followed up by a4 at some time, then it is completely playing second.
The move ...a5 is customary in some openings e.g. the Italian Giuoco Pianissimo.

TheMsquare

😀.. #17 tempo loss strategy is easily copyable while still preparing to play a sound black opening.. e3 e6 for example

1.a3 alters the position but to put the argument to rest black can say over to you again white with 1.a6

Black maybe

And now I'm at a crossroads again. I'm so comfortable with my choices that I don't know which side of the coin I really want to be on anymore.
