Where do you play?

I play at Chess.com of course, but I also play at FICS. I also belong to the Clermont County Chess Club ,a local club for face to face otb games. I was wondering how many actually belong to a local club and play there? Our club attendance is down as well as membership. I believe this is due to internet play. Does anyone view this as a problem?  Will the internet kill off local chess clubs?

possibly, people, men and women have so many things on thier plates thats it's hard to find time for a chess club, when they can take a few minutes on the computer to fill that need

I don't currently belong to a chess club. It isn't because I'm unwilling to make the time. Rather, I don't feel that I have, as yet, developed my game to even a beginning club player level. Once I've learned as much as I can from my computer-aided  autodidactic study of the game, I'm going to purchase a lifetime membership (the most economical option) membership at one of the local chess clubs.

The two chess clubs near my house seem to be thriving. One is in a chess store in an otherwise thoroughly depressing third rate shopping mall. That's the one I intend to join. Whenever I've been there on the weekends, it's full of people playing speed chess and they usually have some sort of tournament going on in the concourse just outside the store. The other club is in the local Jewish community center. It will be years before I'll show my face in there, as the vast majority of those dudes are Russians, as in from Russia as opposed to, for instance, a 3rd generation Russian-American.

I played at the local club for a short while until demands of my job and family commitments forced me to quit. The club met on Friday nights and there always seemed to be about 20 or so people there. I played in one tournament and only won one game, but I found it a thrill just to compete. It was very exciting. However, to go back would be difficult due to the ongoing demands of life. So, online chess has definately filled a void for me and I am satisfied with that. Besides, I believe that the internet was created just for us chessplayers. :)Wink

It has been my experience that it doesn't matter what your skill level you will be welcome at the club I belong to, and as far as learning the members have been unbelievable helpful and encouraging. Live coaching is so much different than software coaching. Don't worry about losing, I learn more about my game from loses than wins, And I lose much more than I win so at this rate I should be world champ by about next Friday.Wink

I don't belong to a club; I play here and at another site.  I doubt the internet will kill off chess clubs because many people love the face to face interaction.  Also, there are others who will have nothing to do with the internet.

I unfortunatelt don't belong to a club at the moment. I have not had the time or energy (due to my past illness) to join a chess club here in San Francisco. I also need to improve my game if I want to join a club like the Mechanics Institute. I'd be too embarrassed to try and pass my game skills off to a bunch of really good players. It's not that I have a problem losing, since I gain many lessons from my losses. However, I don't want to waste anyone's time, especially at such a traditional club.

I've been a member of my local chess club, called the WJCA, since it set up three and a half years ago (and I've been junior captain for 2 years). In that time our membership has steadily grown to about 20 regulars and a further 20 semi regulars. In fact last week (the first session after the holidays) we gained a further 4 members. The internet has almost certainly not pulled away many of our members.

Chess is almost a completely different game when playing face to face.

At a local park from time to time.

I play once a week at my local club. Chatting with people adds a great deal to the fun!

If you ever visit London and want to play a game I can recommend the Central London Chess Cafe in the British Film Institute lounge at 21 Stephen Road. It's organized by women but men are welcome as well.
