Sorry for opening yet another thread. But as I am appreciating more and more of this beautiful game, I cannot help but imagine that the real beauty is a gentle holmgang under the breeze say in a shaded park under the pines, or in beach overlooking a pier or dolphins, or at a mountaintop chalet.

Like Japanese tea ceremony, even similar games can be different and unique.

Where is the most beautiful place you have ever placed OTB chess?

There is a place in Schwabish Hall, Germany, beside a river where they have one of those big chess boards with hugh pieces (the King is about three feet tall). This place is surrounded by sidewalk cafes and a few tourist sites, as I remember it. You had to stand to move the pieces. This was, of course, outdoors. It cost a mark (at the time, about 35 cents, American) to play a game, which the challenger had to pay. There were tall chairs for the players to sit  on, and there was always a few spectators close by drinking beer and cabitsing (sp) amoungst themselves. It was beautiful there and I spent many an hour with my American and German friends enjoying the game and the view. It was over forty years ago when I was there, but I will remember it always.
