Which one of these five animal species would make the best chess players?

1. Chimpanzees exhibit remarkable intellectual abilities that have grown into a great fascination to humans. Chimps are very capable of making and using tools, employing communal hunting technics and excellent problem solving. Chimps communicate effectively using sign language with humans.

Chimpanzees can remember information for extended periods of time. Their ability to think way ahead is often used when hunting using clever attack tricks. Chimps have also been observed using psychological manipulation with their family members. Recently studies have shown chimpanzees teaching sign language to young ones without any human interference.

2. Parrots are widely acknowledged as one of the most intelligent birds. They can also do amazing things with their prominent beaks. Parrots can mimic human speech, understand its meaning and even form comprehensible sentences. A parrot can also retain learned information and is well capable of solving quite complicated problems.

3. Whales converse with each other in stunning melodic sounds. The sounds made by whales can be heard by others from miles away and get the message home. Whales travel in large groups and rely on each other during hunting expeditions as they employ manipulative tricks in catching their prey. Group feedings and attacks are just some successful tactics and acumen features used by whales.

4. The Octopus is one of the most intelligent sea creatures. They possess the ability to invent and play games, solve complex problems and even steer through mazes. Considering their short memories, an octopus can effectively mimic others, spread cultural information and communicate using patterns, flashing and colors. They have a highly developed spatial learning ability and navigational skills. They also possess highly creative predatory and manipulative knowledge.

6. Did you know that elephants have an excellent sense of humor? Elephants are also extremely emotional creatures. They experience grief, joy and even mourn the dead. Elephants also enjoy playing various games, including stick games, squirting water from their trunks among others. They are fast learners and even display self-awareness by being able to recognize themselves in the mirror.

They can mimic sounds and use tools to solve their immediate problems. Some have been recorded mimicking the sound of passing vehicles or that of their trainers. They also first clean their food before eating. When a pregnant elephant mother is due to give birth, she employs self-medication (chews on the Boraginaceae family tree leaves) so as to induce labor.

The article also mentions that they have short memories though, which should be a pretty big disadvantage in chess.

ChessOfPlayer

Perhaps the Python would be best at stategy.

Perhaps too fond of a dubious gambit? Isn't there also a particular breed of dog that has a reputation for an unusual opening choice?

kleelof

I didn't see the rest of the list. But I think I'm going to go with Lions.

I think elephants have great memory, so may be they can mug up the whole opening theory like computers. On the other hand, monkeys seem to have improvization(intelligence) & creativity. So, a monkey vs elephant chess match would be a classic, if it were possible.

The predators might be good at spotting the weak squares & weak pieces. And also closing the escape routes of a trapped piece.
