Which way should knights face?

When playing over-the-board chess, which way do you orient your knights?

  1. Forward, obviously. That's the direction we are attacking!
  2. Both towards the left (if you are right-handed) or towards the right (if you are left-handed). Makes it easier and more natural to grab them and move them.
  3. Looking at your king. Makes the setup more symmetric, and is more symbolic.
  4. Always looking at the opposing king (regardless of where they are on the board). That's the target!
  5. Both facing away from the opponent, because I'm a bit weird like that.

I've seen some players face knights toward king to start and leave them facing that original direction throughout the game no matter where they go. Idea being they know which knight started where. I have no idea how that helps, but it's interesting.

My knights always face forward, until I blunder them.  Then my opponent twirls them around in their fingers to spite me.

I think #5 so your opponent can't see their intentions.
