Which way to the bishops face?
The Bishop's Face? Isn't that a pub?
In which case, second left and straight for a 100 yards. It'll be on your left.
I've never noticed (all I care about is the knights).
Which way do you face your knights? A sergeant I played with in the service turned his facing the King and Queen, then when recording his games he would know which was his King's knight and Queen's knight. I can't remember why that was important to him. I thought that was different and have been placing my knights on the board that way ever since. Besides that, some of my sets have fancy knights and I like to look their profiles rather than the back of their heads. I enjoy using fancy sets while playing skittle games.
This reminds me of a question sent to Ann Landers: " What is the proper way to install toilet paper on the roller?" Who cares as long as its there? Same goes for chess pieces. Who cares as long as they are on the correct square?
which way does the king face? if I put it sideways will I gain a psychological advantage over my opponent?
It doesn't take much to upset some people. Such things as that do not bother me, nor does noise. Many of my early games were played in very noisy areas. My wife also says once I get my mind on something I don't hear anything. It does help when playing chess.
i once played someone who said (after mating him with my queen supported by a fianchettoed bishop) that he didn't see the mate threat because the bishop looks similar to a pawn when the slit isn't facing to the front. ^_^
maybe you got an idea now, how to place the bishops ;)
Some sets bishops and pawns do look similar. Poor design, but it does make for a good excuse if one loses. Makes sense why Staunton chessmen are used in tournaments.
this thread might be the best ever!
I joined chess.com to better my game, but I am spending too much time enjoying these comments. However, I have learned some things I needed to know, too.

I make perfectly sure that all the pieces are facing ME! Then I'll do my little welcome speech and serve tea.
