Who becomes the World Champion if the current world champion dies?

In a hypothetical situation, if Magnus Carlsen were to die, who'd become the next World Chess Champion? Would it be the World Champion before him (Anand in this case) or would there be a tournament or would it be the winner of the Candidates Tournament?

They would have a tournament to determine the next champion.

is this actually true or are u assuming it to be the case?

The chessplayer who killed him would become the new world champ, but not for long, because somebody would depose him in the same way.

After Akekhine's death it was a tournament that decided the next world champion.

5 players playing a 5 cycle round robin tournament.

the rules must be different now

Pretty sure the top 2 from the candidates would play the match. Or the top player from candidates and Karjakin.

But after Garry Kasparov left FIDE to form the Professional Chess Association, the previous world champion Anatoly Karpov was crowned as the new world champion.

Reports of his demise have been greatly exaggerated.

That's pretty cool, Anatoly Karpov was given the title once without having to play Fischer, and then a second time without having to play Kasparov. I'd say, let's make him champion a third time if something happens to Carlsen.

Would be appropiate if Karpov wins candidates and Carlsen doesn't show up.

is he in the candidates?

Avatar of Pulpofeira

You are right, he isn't. And Carlsen wouldn't chicken out anyway, so forget about it...

maybe he would die, like in the OP!

Avatar of gingerninja2003

If he died now then Anand might be champion because he was the last person to be champion before Carlsen. Maybe Karjakin as the last challenger. Or they'll just do the candidates and then see who wins.

If he died in April then it'll be whoever won the candidates.
