JMO, but i think anyone that is decent at tactics can see these mates. They are both easy forcing lines. You did mention blitz, so i am assuming this was a blitz game? If so did you miss it due to being low on time? Moving to fast? Would this be a mate you would see at a longer time control?
Who can see this?
Yes, it was blitz (G10), but honestly, I can barely see the first one even knowing it's there.
The second one is easier but the fact it relies on a sacrifice, a file clearance, and a double check, all in three ply...I'm not sure I'd see it either...even with a fair amount of time.

Neither of us play blitz on chess.com so we won't have very good opinions :p

Remove the knight, and now do you see it?
Yeah, I was going to ask something similar.
Is it easier to visualize the line Qg8 Nxg8 hxg8=Q mate?

The reason i brought up removing the knight is because the first position reminded me of a position i read about years ago. It had something to do with tactics, and a piece that seemed "misplaced"
Basically our brains dont want to see what we should see.

That is easier. I think the problem is, for whatever reason, I have a strong tendency to want to recapture with the rook on g1 rather than the pawn on h7...not sure why.

A couple days ago I lost a game on time. I missed two forced mates along the way. I was rated 1238 for blitz at the time and am now 1305--I move around a bit.
What I'm curious about is who "should" see these with a high degree of certainty? A 1400? 1600? 1800? I suppose I'm talking about chess.com blitz ratings here.
Here I miss 24.Qg8+ Rxg8, 25.hxg8Q+ Rxg8, 26.Rxh6#
And here I miss 26.Qg8+ Rxg8, 27.hxg8Q#
I really don't think I'd be too likely to see the first one. The second one I'd like to think I would, but clearly I didn't.
What do you think?
