Obviously me. :) But really... I would say Fischer. I would have Kasparov, Karpov and Carlsen at 2-4 in no particular order.

Bobby Fischer

JamieDelarosa

Fischer had the single best year ever (1970-1971), and was the strongest player in the world from 1962, at least through the first Spassky match.

Only one year. He is the weakest champion ever.  We cannot even compare Fischer with Smyslov and Tal over a period of 20 years...Bobby Fischer was a one-hit-wonder.

There were no legitimate Soviet world champions - they all benefited from cheating, starting with Botvinnik.  The first legitimate Russian world champion was Gary Kasporov, well, at least since Alekhine, who had left.

Smylov was the highest rated player in the world for 59 months between 1952 and 1958, with a peak rating of 2800 (Sep 1956, according to ChessMetrics).

Tal was the highest rated player in the world for 38 months from 1958 to 1966, with a peak rating of 2799 (Sep 1960).

Fischer was the highest rated player in the world for 109 months from 1964 to 1974, with a peak rating of 2895 (Oct 1971).

The numbers don't lie - Fischer dwarfed the Soviet competition.

Tal was a bit unlucky that the country he was born in was invaded and annexed by the Soviet Union, otherwise he might have had the chance to become legitimate World Champion :-)

When Tal won the World Championship Chessmetrics rank eleven Soviets plus Gligoric as the dozen strongest players in the world. It's difficult to explain the Soviet dominance with cheating. Fischer won the title easily in 1972 because he was the clearly strongest player in the world by then, but just wasn't good enough yet to qualify in 1962.

Mikhail BOTWINNIK

aman_makhija

Quite obviously ksparov, Karpov, Fischer, Anand.

Quite obviously not Carlsen!

BoardMonkey

I vote for Capablanca.

vitovolterra

Fischer was not a good world champin. A true Champion must win his title, defend it and live his decadence with chivlary as Botwinnik did

TonyChecks
Gioachino Grecho. Or maybe..... Michele Goden
