Anand was a GREAT blitz player. But the bar has been raised dramatically in recent years. Blitz has become far more respectable recently, and the top players take it more seriously.
Carlsen is currently the best blitz player in history, and Nakamura is probably the second best blitz player ever. But Kasparov and Anand are probably in the top 5. Fischer and Tal were great, but this is the Golden Age of Chess.
Btw, every single world champion except Botvinnik excelled in blitz chess.
Yes, we can Safely call Carlsen the best blitz player right now, and let us wait until someone better emerges! :)
