First of all, it appears that Bill Gates isn't much of a chess player. Secondly, for years, Carlos Slim Helu (sp?) was and is the richest man in the world due to a monoply in communications in Mexico.

I think Bill Gates doesn't care about being the richest person on the planet he gave away a lot of his money to charity otherwise I guess he would have been double as rich as Carlos. Microsoft gets money each time a computer is sold in the whole world.

Very true. Didn't Magnus beat Gates in less than 15 moves recently?
It's more like being a professional violin player than anything else. It requires a great deal of intelligence and dedication, yet it makes less money than being a CEO and playing the occassional tune.
Disclaimer that the following guess is pure speculation.
Nevertheless it is serious guess in a way.
I guess GM Ken Rogoff.
I count him as real chess player since he is a GM.
Nowadays he is a famous economics guy of some sort.
P.S. I`m not positive as to whether I got his name accurate.

I think the question should be; who's the richest professional Chess player?
GM Anatoly Karpov is said to be a billionaire. Not from Chess but from a company that he owns...
