I think a lot of people like Tal, because he played a 'schoolboy' type of chess. I mean by this, that he often sacrificed everything to the attack; it was sacrifice after sacrifice: incredibly exciting to witness. And it's probably true to say that most of us would like to play in this manner. Most players (pace Petrosian) probably think that a brilliant sacrificial attack is more exciting to watch than a positional 'crush'. So Tal, through his combinative style, encapsulated a romantic understanding of the game, and this seems to dovetail with most peoples' view of what a 'brilliant' chess player is like.
Who is your favorite world champion? (Recent & and Old)
Tal like Adolph Anderssen brilliant a swashbuckling tactician who brought life to the pieces with energy and joy to millions with his games.
I remember reading Siegbert Tarrasch's book he said in it that he saw Anderssen only once he was in awe of him he did not approach I guess it was like being in the presence of Beethoven or Bach.

Paul Morphy was not official World Champion, but he was the best player in the world.
Recent ? Bobby Fischer.

Kasparov has always been my favorite. And I am an American; offcourse what the heck does that have to do with anything...

My favourite players are:
Old: Steinitz, Lasker and Tarrasch.
Recent: Botvinnik, Kasparov and Fischer.
Morphy was a very talented player, but he wasn't a world champion. In fact, there were no official world champions in his time.
William Steinz was the first offical Champion, Morphy was not lucky, in fact he was a really good blindfold player.
