Who knows of Phish and their chess with the audience?

Back in 1995 the band Phish played Chess with the audience. Every venue they played a new move would be made by the band and a move by the audience. The band would make their move in the first set on big chess board behind the stage. Then during the concert the "Phans" who wanted to play would cast their move at a Green Peace booth. Then they would tally up all the moves as vote chess, and the audience's move would be made accordingly. There are actually videos of this on Youtube. Phish Audience Chess Move.

Pretty cool...thanks for posting. It would be cool if dead & co. Would play grateful deadopoly with the audience.

Not surprised the band lost from that position... Apparently they won the first game earlier that year.

I did the move 10/31/95. Very active in both games. Was at every show that tour. Went backstage to finish the first game and start the second.

That is awesome. Do you have any recollection or record of the games other than what's publicly available? Also... were people generally stoked on Quadrophenia or did they all complain about the Halloween show pick like they would now?

This post aged pretty well.

NYE 2020. A new chess game will be played between phish and phriends. They will play their 1995 MSG show. All on Chess.com.

And it’s back...

Looking forward to how this all goes down on NYE. I was at both the Austin shows and the St. Paul show. Hank Schwab was the guy behind the Greenpeace table and I think Matty Beck? They would have a handful of candidate moves and the plans would vote on them. Cool memories.

Is there a club chat and can it handle all of the dirty wooks trying to discuss moves late into the night?

Thanks! I usually use the app, so I didn’t actually see the club stuff

I love this idea and look forward to the show (that I missed in '95). What time do we start?

Unfortunately the app (iOS or Android) doesn't support the club functionality at all, maybe it's new. But for the voting during the show we'll need to be working...errr wooking...err rooking...from a laptop/desktop.

Hey squirrel - I did the move in Pittsburgh on 11/24/95!!! If memory serves, you were dressed as a Wookie on Halloween (wasn’t there, heard the tapes).
