who tips the king- Winner or loser?

I have always wondered who plucks the King over after a checkmate. I myself, prefer others to pluck my King as I know my opponent played the better game, and I feel disgusted when it happens. If however I checkmate someone, I never pluck their King unless asked to do so. I was wondering which is more respectful to the game of chess and if the King should be tipped at all. Also what happens if a resignation occurs? please reply.

I never thought that the king was tipped after checkmate, only as a resignation. I guess I still have much to learn about OTB chess.

At checkmate there is no need for anyone to tip over a king.  Tipping the king is a way of saying that you are resigning the game.  As such only you can tip your own king and only if the game is not already resolved in mate.

I like to tip the king when I resign. It is as if the king surrenders.

 That sounds so wrong! Surprised

Yet I can't turn away!

Plucking other people's kings sounds like a good way to get a bishop jammed in your eye.  That wouldn't be the best way for either of you to show respect for the game.

I prefer to shake the hand when I resign. Of course, you shouldn't  be tipping your opponent's king.

The loser, to show a game well played.  Sometimes maybe if you do not like the other, to not let them get the pleasure of saying "checkmate."

I beat a guy in a real tournament and he tipped my King over....

That confuses me to this day.

I would much prefer them to resign in for example an endgame where I'm two pawns or a piece up. I don't want to play till checkmate! that could take 80+ moves if I had to win by making a pawn queen and then mating the king! Maybe if I was playing a winning combination, but even then I wouldn't care because for them to resign means they saw it. But I don't think my tactics are good enough that that would happen.
