Why are chess puzzles so frequently incorrect?

DaMaGor, thanks for the kind advice.

To the tongue waggers, I say that your vitriole only advertises the sad fact that not all parents succeed in raising children.

Oh please. Maybe open your ears more often than your mouth and you'll be able to protect your pride.

Another product of failed parenting. So many infallible souls in this thread.

DiogenesDue

Whether trolling or not...

Nobody claimed to be infallible, you actually came closest to that claim when you wondered why so many chess puzzles are wrong.  Let's be clear, it wasn't the mistake in not understanding the puzzle that people reacted to, it was the hubris of assuming you were always correct and the puzzles were just wrong.

Statements that got you into this mess:

"I'm surprised chess.com published this lame puzzle"

"When solving chess puzzles--from a variety of sources--I notice that the programmed solution to about one in five is unequivocally incorrect"

"developers of chess puzzles are chess challenged"

I don't think you're in any position to judge others for their parents.  It's the same hubris that led you to believe you could beat the national champion of Indonesia as a casual player 1 of 2 games, by "catching him by surprise".

You were just fine had you finished here:

"OK, I reconstructed the puzzle on a physical board and followed the moves so kindly proffered. Instantly I was able to see what everybody was saying. I was wrong. Good grief!"

Take your lumps and just move on.

You don't need to beat me up. I have done enough of that for both of us.

BTW, do people who troll admit to their mistakes?

Strangemover

Let it go. You were wrong, everyone else was right. You acted like a buffoon by firstly claiming flatly that the puzzle was incorrect, then continuing to assert that you were right and that everyone else was wrong despite several people showing you what you were missing. And with such pomposity that it was impossible to resist trolling you.

After Qh1+ Kxh1 c1=Q Qc6+, Qc6 is delivering a check to King on g2. This queen cannot be captured with white Rook or Queen, so the check is neat. It is followed by King moving to either h2 or g1. For Kh2.. Rf2# and for Kg1.. Rb1# delivers a checkmate. It’s a mate in 5. The imminent danger white poses a move away, stays imminent and one move away as White king is in check on every move until mate.

No, that was admirable...which is why I said you should have stopped there, and not tossed out the couple of failed parenting jibes.  There are bound to be a few more people that "discover" this thread and say something, but if you take a swipe at each one as it occurs, the thread bumps will continue and this will never drop below the radar and disappear for you wink.png.

I find a move that checkmate the king and they said it's wrong.

Link to the puzzle and what you think the solution is?

No there aren't. There are some that are incorrect but it's a very small percentage.

At least you realize puzzle ratings are not real.

Ris2

What

hapless_fool
Puzzle ratings are not real. They must mean something, though I’m not sure exactly what.

I do puzzles for rating when I am wide awake, free of distraction, post 2 cups of coffee, and the meds have all clicked in. In other words, once a month.

OTOH I play live whenever I am bored, which is a lot.

My puzzle rating is 1700 something. I got my rapid up to 900 and then I tanked several games in a row. Oh well.

You do know that people can open your profile and see that your puzzle rating is 1680, not 2400?

I've only encountered 2 where I plugged it into Stockfish and my move leads to a win (but the puzzle solution is indeed faster). That said, the solution is correct in this case and the computer figured it out right.

I ran the scenario through a few engines and they all agree. Here is the solution they all agreed on:

2. ... Qh1+ (Disrupts White and forces White King to move)

3. Kxh1 (Self-defense) c1=Q+ (Black promotes Employee of the Month to Queen, keep in mind once that pawn promotes, the White King is still on Rank 1 with the new Black Queen, so he's in check in this position by default)

4. Kg2 (King needs to hide again) Qc6+ (She's angry)

5. Qd5 (Blocks Black Queen in attempt to protect king) Qxd5+ (Black Queen isn't having that)

6. Kh2 (Sweating bullets, hides again) Rxf2+ (Black Rook starred in "Inception")

7. Kg1 (He tried) Qg2#

If you move Rb7, it is possible to win, assuming your opponent gets tired of playing cat and mouse with the Kings and Queens (unless someone blunders). I'm still waiting for Stockfish 16.1 to finish the game based on Rb7. On turn 28, the only thing left are Kings (the inevitable draw).
