Why are there separate titles for women?

I'm guessing they were created because the feminine of 'master' is 'mistress', and that word has negative connotations associated to it. In my mind, master is a pretty neutral word, and as a woman, I'd prefer the title Grandmaster - Woman Grandmaster sounds silly, unnatural and unnecessary. But that's me!

If women want to organise their own tournaments and titles, how the heck does that affect you adversely?

Women don't organize this, lol. Those FIDE titles were made in the 70s, almost certainly by men.

Why are there separate competitions and separate titles for minor league sports?

Isn't it to develop new talent?

The number of FIDE rated women is only about 1/10th of the number of FIDE-rated men. With a pool of players that is so much smaller, of course the outliers (both best and worst) will be less extreme.

Even if it is moronic.

Guys. Women vs Men in physics is usually men win, but women vs men in brain strength is usually equal. Im guessing the olympic wanted to stick with the Women olympics with women only or something.

i think its cause FIDE wanted to motivate or inspire more female players into the game

thats not true? ive seen women beat tons of men at chess also that doesnt make sense because if women can only compete with other women then what do men compete against if not other men?

women can still earn titles like grandmaster, fidemaster, international master and it has technically happened times before

women titles have different requirements so its just a stepping stone on the ladder of titles in some sense

its also because theres less women players so fide tried to make it more inviting by doing so  because less players obviously means less chance of having as good players or top players

highest women chess rating is around 2650 and highest men is around 2800

theres still a big difference as of right now but its catching up slowly i guess

but its not that equal

most women have actual lives like talking to friends or whatever unlike men like me

imagine having a life

having a life isnt the issue here

people at the top level women or men carreers are chess so they do have a life

you  on the other hand dont have a life but dont have rating either so therefore your just bad and you cant insult people for playing chess

In past centuries "the weaker sex" was kept out of many facets of life. There were no female doctors, lawyers, architects, etc 200 years ago--the governing organizations that controlled these activities didn't allow women to participate. When organized chess began the same strictures applied.

By the end of the 19th century there were separate women's events in some places. When FIDE was new they organized the first women's world championship (1927). After World War II FIDE took over the "men's" world championship and started awarding international titles--IM and GM. AS women still competed separately the WIM title was created in 1950.

As time passed more women took up chess and some played more often in open tournaments and a few became strong enough to earn the open IM title so FIDE created the WGM title (1976) to recognize the very strongest female players. Soon (1978) longtime Women's World Champion Nona Gaprindashvili became the first woman to earn the open GM title.

Since then more women have played in top open events and earned open titles, so by now most women just play in mixed tournaments. The old women-only competitions are kept going for two reasons: 1) to recognize top women players and encourage more women to play chess; 2) in many places around the world (Iran, Saudi Arabia and many more) women and men are forbidden by law from mixing in public, leaving separate women's tournaments as the only place females can play.

It would seem that the logical course would be to gradually raise the minimum requirements for WIM and WGM titles to match the open titles, but unfortunately the legal difficulties women face in many societies means that this will likely take quite a few years so the separate titles will continue to exist for the foreseeable future.
