Given that computerized chess comes in the form of software like Fritz, is there any good reason to but a chess computer like Millennium ?  IE, is there anything that a Milleniun chess computer for $350 can do that Fritz cannot?

The idea to play with a chess set computer instead of a computer screen is the feeling, in my case, I prefer play physical with the pieces instead of with a flat screen...for me is like the difference playing poker on line or on a table with friends...

I'd say the market for standalone chess computers run in the high end market. People that want to simulate playing an over the board game and want the option to play at a desk away from a computer, but still want the option of plugging in a laptop or desktop so they can load any chess engine that they feel like.

Definitely combining physical and Internet give you millions of resources to enjoy the game...agreed.

I did some research. Looks like the options for a chess computer is.

A) A fairly inexpensive chess computer. Under $100, and most likely targeting kids and teens, or an impulse purchase as gift to someone smart and nerdy.

B) Between $100 and $500, definitely a more serious chess player. At just under $500 you can get the best chess computer you can find that isn't a "luxury" purchase.

C) Over $500 that's the luxury crowd. Your looking to buy a chess computer to show off to your chess buddies, and anybody else in your life will think your an idiot.

D) Over $1000: Your looking for "the dream" package from DGT: Electronic chess board you hook up to your computer/laptop, plus the DGT Pi clock, so you can use the board away from the computer . Plus the DGT board means, with a laptop, haul it to the chess club, so you can record your moves without using writing the moves down. Of course, the DGT board is also used for the top boards in tournaments, especially if the tournament is very important, like a National Championship or a tournament that has a large money purse.
