Just a point of interest from a Chess Idiot. Check Reddit on castling statistics and the mention of numerous Grandmasters who Castle. I have no idea how to read the columns, and there are a bunch of them. Sometimes I castle, sometimes not. I still lose a lot regardless of which side I castle to or do not castle. Happy hunting!
Why Castle?
When your king is in the center it can be attacked from either flank. If you wish to use the f-pawn to attack your opponent's castled kingside position castling puts your rook on the f-file and your king off the diagonal you are about to open. Castling queenside brings the rook to the center and your king out of the center in one fell swoop. Having the rooks connected can aid penetration to the seventh rank. Much of the conflict in most games is aimed at the center of the board as occupation of the center gives your pieces more scope and restricts your opponent's movements--so lines might be opened in the center at any time leaving an uncastled king in danger.
or maybe castle on like ... move 28.
