I play chess because I cannot master it...I love competition, and chess is the hardest thing I have ever done in my life....
Why Chess?

It's fun and timeless.
In 20 years no one will care that I reached the Tower of Voodoo in some computer game or other, but people will still be playing chess

1. Fun
2.Helps me relax
3.I just love the game
4.meet other people
5.Could maybe become a carrier
6.Helps me in school

OTB! The expressions opponents make when you get them between a rock and a hard place are priceless. Now, what if chess were "solved" one day, as Yahtzee was in 2003. Let's say that perfect play by both chess players always results in a victory for White, or far worse, it's like tic-tac-toe and no one wins! I can't imagine giving up chess, but I have given up on tic-tac-toe.
Tic-TacToe - If neither player makes any mistakes, all games will result in draws.
Yahtzee
Woodward (2003) has solved the game completely by computing all possible outcomes and working out optimal playing strategies (Peterson 2003, Woodward 2003).

Chess OTB is better than playing online as you can't beat the real thing. I also like the socialising in chess and i have met new people and friends through the game who i wouldn't have met otherwise!

I really think that people who try to full out solve strategy games and ruin it for everyone should be shot. Checkers was solved recently as well by some useless nerd who spent a couple of decades computing all of the possible outcomes.

Checkers is "solved" ? What does this mean exactly ? That two super computers will draw every game ? Do you know the "solution" ? I dont know the solutions to all the various checkers "openings" and I doubt any human does. If you or I sit down to play a champion in checkers we are gonna lose almost all the games ! I am speaking of a human champion ofcourse. I know how to never lose in tic tac toe because its a far less complicated game and the "solution" is easy to remember. To compare it to checkers is ridiculous.

Is this not the same as the engines developed for chess moves?
Where is the fun where you don't do the thinking, a machine does it for you.
I really just don't get it...
Yea I agree I wish chess engines were not around either. At some point I've had to accept their existence because if I didn't I'd probably grow completely fed up with the game. So I just sit back and wait for chess to inevitably be solved one day. Hopefully this is still way down the road though as it's billions upon billions of times harder to solve than checkers.

...then came Chess960 / FischerRandom

lol Keith - well, give the hackers time...
Even that can be hacked. I'ld like to see them hack Shogi, the Japanese Chess - where what you've taken from your opponent, you may place anywhere on the board at anytime - even to checkmate your opponent! :))

Well I don't play checkers much (or really ever), but I know from reading articles that the solving of checkers has had a large negative influence on the game. The main problem with it is that checkers has now lost a sizeable chunk of it's mystique for many people. Although of course not as complicated as chess, it was a ridiculously complex game. Once again, I don't care as much since I don't play the game, but when I compare it to the possibilities of solving chess down the road, I get concerned.
One of the main draws of chess for me is how much is still unknown. People can play for years and still come across something new in almost every game. If the game were one day completely solved, that would bother me a lot. Just as so many people were bothered when the great Kasparov finally succumbed to Deep Blue. Sure, many individual games won't change much and for the most part the bad players will still lose to the good players as you said. So I guess it's something intangible about the whole situation that is troublesome to me. The game is ancient and shouldn't be tampered with. Unless a human can solve it on his/her own, of course.

Yea I wasn't really thinking about that, I guess that would be the next wave. I wouldn't mind, I get tired of people memorizing openings anyway, so that's a bonus.

Because I can....
Couldn't have put it better myself.
Also, why does Roger Federer play tennis, and Ricky Ponting play cricket?
Because they enjoy it and they are good at it.
Good reasons... i like em, mine are
1. fun and excitment /laughter
2. intellect boost
3. Competitive spirit
4. to meet players :))
