2 boys allege Lombardy sexually abused them when he was supposed to be giving chess lessons. William Lombardy was a priest and friend of Fischer.

In the 1970s, while Fischer was complaining about the poor conditions GMs had to endure, Louis Statham put on an annual tournament in Lone Pine California. A multi-millionaire inventor, manufacturer of precision devices and avid chess player, he was forced by ill health to move to a remote desert location. He also built a company headquarters, housing for some employees, and a fine hotel to house the representatives of companies with which he did business. This hotel was turned over to the chessplayers for a week or so every spring. Room and board were free and prizes were generous.
Statham, according to his grandson, sold his Beverly Hills mansion (to Hugh Hefner) after his first wife died because he hated the type of fast lifestyle they led there. The chess took place in Statham Hall, a small building he had constructed in 1975 and which he donated to the town after the chess tournaments ended in 1981 and which became the town hall. Prior to 1975 the playing site was the American Legion Hall with the VFW Hall used for analyzing Statham was in good health and said he moved to Lone Pine for the high mountain air. He did have a bad back which prevented him from pursuing his former physical activities such as sailing so he took up correspondence chess and spent a lot of time with shortwave radio, During the early days of the tournament when there were fewer contestants, he and his second wife, Doris, a highly accomplished women, had the players over to their estate, called Aibonito, for a sit down meal. After the tournaments grew in size, they instead threw a cocktail party or banquet for the players. The players stayed at such place as the Mt. Whitney Motel or the Dow Villa Motel. All eleven Louis Statham Masters-Plus Tournaments were invitationals with no entrance fee. From 1971-74 it was all American but in 1975 invitations were sent world-wide.

I wonder if one of the reasons that FIDE balked at Fischer's demands/complaints---and ultimately stripped him of his title---was due to remembrance of another world champion from the past, LASKER...(I think)...who similarly started placing conditions on his title defense matches that obviously benefited HIM (much as Fischer tried to do against Karpov 59years later). It was in fact because of LASKER that FIDE was formed in the first place, to put limitations on the power of defending world champions.

I think comparable episodes happened repeatedly.
Alekhine always avoided playing a rematch with Capablanca after Buenos Aires.
Staunton was not a world champion, but also he avoided playing Morphy in a match.
As for Fide, Fischer's point was that Fide favoured the Soviets.
Alekhine was probably murdered and next came Botvinnik..
Korchnoi had more or less the same opinion as Fischer about Fide and with some reason, considering the Soviet state sent his son to Siberia after he defected, and Fide did nothing in order to guarantee a fair match in Merano.
So there you see that Fischer may have had a point in the first place.
Kasparov went ahead and created a world Championship of his own.
More recently Radjabov lost his chance to participate in the Candidates, because he was right about covid...
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
I wish I could tell Fischer that he did good. And that I appreciate him. He has a spot in my mind.
