So if two gm play there should always be a draw well wouldnt it be hard to become world champion if every gm where equally strong
why do GMs lose
@OP , GM's lose because, they don't want you to make another thread complaining about how boring top level chess is with only draws.
ok. I know I'm new to this thread- but "why do gms' lose" is easy to answer.
the better question to answer IS- "do very strong players only Lose because they are trying to win"
I'm thinking, if two strong chessplayer really wanted to avoid being beaten- there skillful enough to pick safe positions, where its unlikely they would be beaten... right?
or maybe not. maybe just tiredness, tricky tactics, and very occasional blunders decide tournaments even when both strong chess players Are playing safely.

So if i just became Gm i can just draw Magnus Carlsen until im like second highest rated in the world yeah that makes sense
@Dragon
I said I was new to the thread. I get that a gm has to Win to be WC. what I wonder about is whether these gm's are going into positions they knew that are risky- or whether they Are playing to be safe (and blunders happen).
I suspect its a personal decision- different for each player.
obviously Tal played in pretty risky ways whereas Karpov said he was happy to press for a tiny positional advantage. I appreciate stuzz's answer.
as for the OP, I have no idea what he was thinking. he should be proud though, a pretty simple and even obvious question and its post #31 and still going...
sometimes gms lose more than a game

Keep a few things in mind:
1. They typically play other gms who are also good.
2. Humans make mistakes
3. Gms vary in skill, they can be 2500(minimum) to over 2800 in some cases which is a huge difference.
4. Are you implying all gm games should end in stalemate?

Because they play other gms
